Aristide Kamla

Marine Biologist & Manatee Defender

Aristide Kamla is a marine researcher working on the conservation of the African manatee and other large aquatic wildlife in Cameroon, his native country. He founded the African Marine Mammal Conservation Organization and built a mobile app called SIREN to address the knowledge gap for aquatic species in Cameroon. He also initiated the first biological control approach to restore the African manatee habitat in Lake Ossa.

Tara Roberts spent the last few years following, diving with, and telling stories about a group of Black scuba divers as they search for slave shipwrecks around the world. Her journey was turned into a six-part, National Geographic–produced narrative podcast called "Into the Depths," as well as a cover story for the March 2022 issue of National Geographic magazine.
